Tell us a little bit about your business?
We are an independent agency that shops for quality insurance at the best possible rates for our client’s needs. We customize insurance plans that fit our client’s demand for their auto, home, commercial, renters, workers comp, or CGL coverage. In addition, Tejas Insurance Agency offers services for car titles/registration and notaries.
What is the single most important piece of advice you would give someone starting a business?
Organize yourself and maintain a good relationship with everyone. I do this with my staff, marketing representatives, and of course our customers. Building relationships with others can later benefit you and your company.
Why did you start your business?
I was given an opportunity to purchase my older brother’s business as he was in the middle of taking on another profession. I was only 24 years old at the time, but I knew I was a fast learner and had the self-drive. My parents were also small business owners and I always admired their success. Wanting the same favorable outcome my parents had, it was an easy decision to take over the business.
What keeps you motivated to continue your business?
What keeps me motivated is seeing my company grow! I started by having one location for about 7 years. After a while, it started to feel like a routine job. I needed to challenge myself with more, so I decided to open up another location. That was the best decision I made because even though it was a hard step to take, it made opening other locations much easier for the long run.
What are some typical challenges you have with your business?
Currently, I am fully staffed but there was a time when hiring the right people was one of the hardest challenges. Other challenges included training and learning new programs that would help our business run faster, easier, and in sync as we continued to open more locations.
What is the best thing about being a business owner?
Besides the income, the best part of being the business owner is being able to set my own schedule. Although my job requires me to work for long hours, I still manage to have lunch with my wife and family every day and set vacation days when I need to get away from the office.
