Tell us a little bit about your business?
Skin Sense specializes in anti-aging, laser hair removal, facials and anti-aging injectables such as Botox and Juvéderm. We have a doctor that comes in when needed to do some of these services and everyone who works here is certified in what they do. We pride ourselves on having great pricing compared to other offices that have a full-time doctor on property. We are able to give people these upscale anti-aging services for a really competitive fee.
What is the single most important piece of advice you would give someone starting a business?
You can’t learn to be an entrepreneur in school, you just have to do it and doing it takes a lot of courage, tenacity and grit. But we are still here and I am really proud of my employees as well because they stuck in there with me and one of them is my Mom. I would also say just do it, don’t think too much and follow your gut instincts and of course, you need to have the love and desire for the type of business you are in. There are a lot of things that happen with businesses and if you are not fully committed and in love with what you are doing then, you’ll be burnt out.
Why did you start your business?
I started seeing some aging on my own face and so I started doing some research. I’ve always been interested in beauty, skincare and overall health. So this was a good marriage with all of my different backgrounds because I also studied a little bit of nursing and then I went to laser school and aesthetics school and got experience in the field, learned a lot more about it and decided to take the plunge four years ago.
What keeps you motivated to continue your business? I have a love and a passion for this business and that’s definitely what keeps me going.
If you could do it all over again what would you change? I wouldn’t do anything differently because I learned so many lessons from my mistakes and that’s how I gained my knowledge.
What was one of the most important lessons you learned? I employed people that took advantage a little bit and I was a little too trusting of people because I wanted to give chances.
What are some typical challenges you have with your business? Trying to do everything myself. I need someone to be here on a more permanent basis so that I can go out and build my business. It can be a challenge though because you have to get someone you can trust and you are really, really sure about that person because you are leaving them with your business and it’s hard to let go when you’re used to doing everything.
What is your greatest fear to start a business and how did you overcome it? My greatest fear was failing and just completely falling on my face. Because I set out on this journey to succeed and so that was my greatest fear in the beginning.
How long did it take you to start seeing a return on your initial investment in your company? The return I started seeing was more of my experience and not money. With experience comes more trust from people and that’s when you get the return with money because you gain more confidence and then when your customers trust you, they will refer family and friends to your business. With my business, there’s a constant building of your clientele.
