Tell us a little bit about your business?
Nicole Longnecker Gallery is located in the heart of Houston’s Gallery Row near the intersection of Kirby and Richmond. Our gallery offers a wide range of contemporary artistic ideas in various media by artists on both a national and international level. As a space for viewing fine contemporary art, Nicole Longnecker Gallery is devoted to the representation of emerging and established artists through an active program of exhibitions displaying mostly abstract works in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Our gallery serves as a venue for artists to grow professionally, and as such, we commit to our artists a loyal interest in their personal narratives and visions. Through innovative marketing, our solo & group exhibitions will aid in placing our artists work in a wide range of private and public collections. Nicole Longnecker Gallery is also dedicated to promoting visual art in our community by supporting local educational efforts and various non-profit organizations along with engaging new collectors and educating the community about art.
Why did you start your business?
I was in corporate, working as CFO for a non-profit, but it seemed as if something in my life was lacking. I love art and had a small personal collection, and often thought about having my own gallery. I put a business plan together just so that I could move past that idea. To my surprise, the numbers looked good, so then I had to try it or always regret it!
What types of things do you do to market your business?
We promote our business through a series of 8 unique on-site artist exhibits each year. We use a mailing list to promote the openings, plus we rely a lot on social media. Using our web presence, we promote all of our exhibits, show all the artwork in inventory, and make it available for sale online.
What is the best thing about being a business owner?
Being the owner of a small business gives me the freedom to create my own destiny. I like being able to be a role-model for other women, showing them they can succeed if they believe in themselves. The male-dominated playing field is stacked against women, but one-by-one we are changing the face of business in the world and I am proud to be part of that change.
