Tell us a little bit about your business? We provide quality, non-emergency medical transportation to Houston and the surrounding areas both private and commercial. What that includes is transporting people who are disabled, elderly, handicapped. We take people to doctor’s appointments, chemo, dialysis and physical therapy for workman’s comp clients.
What is the single most important piece of advice you would give someone starting a business? Do your research to learn the type of business you are getting into. Know your business and get advice from people in your industry.
Why did you start your business? When I was living in Atlanta driving for another non-emergency medical transportation company I picked up a client and I realized how important this type of service was to the community. I fell in love with the business and it gave me the idea to start my own company. I also love people; I am a people person.
What was the most challenging aspect of starting your business? Getting capital, finding my wheelchair vans and getting contracts with transportation brokers.
What keeps you motivated to continue your business? I stay motivated because I feel like I am doing something important for my clients and for my community.
How is your company different from others? What I usually hear from my clients is our customer service and presentation is different from other companies they have been with before. Our vans are cleaner and newer and our drivers get out and open the door. All employees are properly trained because it is safer for them and the customer. My drivers also wear uniforms and have a neat and clean-cut appearance. We are personable and respectful to our clients and each other; that’s really big for me.
What kind of mindset do you need to have to be a business owner? You have to be very strong-willed and tenacious about what you want to do. You have to have an “I can do this” attitude an stay positive at all times.
Describe a typical day for you at your business. Every day is different. It can start with a 6am phone call asking me if I can take a transport and if I have the ability I will take it on. If I have a client, I go and pick them up and take them to where they are going and I end my days in my office doing paperwork and scheduling my drivers for the next few days and I give them their assignments. Throughout the day I receive phone calls from contractors, drivers and solve problems if and when they arise. I also get calls for completion of a drivers’ tasks.
If you could be anything other than an entrepreneur, what would it be and why? I would have been an architect if I weren’t an entrepreneur because I always had an interest in it as a young adult but I don’t think anything is more self-fulling to me other than being an entrepreneur.
