Top Holiday Movies of 2017

Good news! There are a LOT of GREAT movies opening this holiday season! The end of the year is also when the movie studios typically release their “Awards contenders.” Films that go for Oscar gold. Bottom line? This means good stuff on the big screen in your local theater. My job is to guide you through the BIG ones you can’t miss. Here we go!

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Might as well kick this list off with the BIGGEST release this holiday season. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI is the LATEST (and GREATEST) in the Star Wars series! Since the announcement a few years ago we would be getting more Star Wars movies, expect one every few months. The next installment is due in May. In THE LAST JEDI, director Rian Johnson continues the story from THE FORCE AWAKENS. Luke (Mark Hamill) is back, so are Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). This is also the last big screen appearance for Carrie Fisher, who graced with her portrayal of Princess Leia in MANY films.

You will probably see this movie over the holidays. Trust me. One piece of advice- stay off of Google until you see it. No need to ruin the plot details ahead of your time in space.

COCO

Another BIG film from Walt Disney Studios, COCO is the story about a young boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. Actors lending their voices to these characters include Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal and Anthony Gonzalez, who plays the role of Miguel. This is his FIRST major role…and he is AWESOME!

COCO is a LOCK for an Academy Award in the Best Animated category. Don’t miss seeing this one!

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Yes- it is a sequel to the original which starred Robin Williams…BUT…this film actually holds its own as a stand-alone movie!

The concept of this film plays on the original storyline from the original released TWENTY TWO years ago in that a “game” is involved. A game that transports its players into another world filled with danger and challenges for survival. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson leads this all-star cast which also includes Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas and Karen Gillan. The effects are better in this film because of advancements in technology which means BIGGER creatures who threaten the JUMANJI game players! Packed with bright colors, good action scenes and a fun storyline, JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE is a fun time at the theater!

FERDINAND

Remember the popular children’s book (from 1936) about a bull who would rather smell the flowers than bullfight? That story comes to life in the animated movie about the beloved bull who is voiced by WWE star John Cena.

Supporting characters are voiced by actors Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Anderson and Hamilton star Daveed Diggs.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

The story of circus creator P.T. Barnum comes to life in this musical! While not a “true” biopic in that SEVERAL freedoms were taken in the actual telling of Barnum’s life, this movie is a foot stomping, sing-along GREAT movie experience.

At the core of the story is the simple message to be yourself, respect others and live life to the fullest! Imagine if we could ALL do that in our daily lives?

Hugh Jackman leads this INCREDIBLE cast that also includes Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson. The musical numbers are INCREDIBLE, the sets are OUTSTANDING and the costumes are FUN! Go see THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, it really is GREAT! There you go!

If you choose to spend any time at the theater this holiday season, these are the movies to put on your “must see” list. Happy holidays- and enjoy the popcorn!
