Rodeo Roundup and Go Texan Weekend
Saddle up, Houston, it’s Rodeo time! Join us for Rodeo Roundup, Feb. 28, 2017, in front of City Hall in downtown to officially kick off the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™. Enjoy live music, free food and games in celebration of Houston’s Western roots as Mayor Sylvester Turner declares March 3, 2017, Go Texan Day.
In 1954, the Go Texan Committee was created with the purpose of spreading a Western spirit in the community, raising awareness of the Show, and encouraging businesses across Houston to decorate storefronts in a Western theme.
Today, the Old West is still alive and well in the Houston metropolitan area. During Go Texan Weekend, Houstonians step out in their best cowboy and cowgirl attire to celebrate one of the world’s largest agricultural expositions.
Trail riders traveling from as far south as McAllen, Texas, and as far northeast as Logansport, Louisiana, signify the start of Go Texan Weekend activities. During the Downtown Rodeo Parade on March 4, more than 3,000 trail riders make their way through downtown Houston— truly a sight to see.
After the parade, visitors can head over to NRG Park for the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, which runs March 2 through March 4, 2017. More than 250 teams will compete for bragging rights as the best grill masters in the world. But, it’s not all about competition. Spectators can enjoy a complimentary barbecue lunch from the Chuck Wagon while listening to live music at The Garden and the Rockin’ Bar-B-Que Saloon.
