The Houston World Series of Dog Shows takes place in Houston’s state-of-the-art NRG Center, from Wednesday, July 18, to Sunday, July 22. In the dog show world, the Houston show is known as a cluster show, meaning it is actually several separate shows, held over consecutive days. Beginning Wednesday, visitors can catch more than 30 independent breed specialty competitions, as well as the Houston Hound, Working Dog and All-Terrier shows.   Thursday offers an all-specialty group of shows with Conformation (Breed Judging) competitions, ending with a “Best in Show” award. Friday, Saturday and Sunday also culminate with “Best of Show” winners, chosen from finalists among the seven variety groups representing more than 150 different breeds.

Besides Breed Judging, the show offers exciting performance events such as Canine Frisbee(SM) and Canine Musical Freestyle.  The Dr. Mari Jon Filla Student Art Exhibit, a gallery of student art focusing on the family dog, is available to enjoy every day of the show as well as the McScotty Market (Vendor Booths) offering dog-related food and accessories and displays from many local dog rescue groups.

This year, the show’s 41st will reprise a popular activity in which the public can participate with their dogs — the AKC’s My Dog Can Do That! event. Here the average family dog can receive a mini “agility” lesson from trained instructors on a condensed course similar to the ones run by champion agility dogs. Participants can sign up in the event competition area at no additional charge but must adhere to these rules:

  • Dogs must be at least 6 months of age.
  • Participants are required to provide proof of dog’s rabies vaccination.
  • Pets must be kept on regular 4-to-6 -foot leash.

For the first time this year, an ever- popular and eye-popping event – the Creative Dog Grooming competition – is being joined by its tamer yet very educational cousin – Breed Standard Grooming.  The Breed Standard Grooming contest is held among groomers preparing dogs for competition in conformation events. This grooming contest focuses on making dogs look flawless and runway ready. They are groomed to highlight their conformance to specific breed standards set by the American Kennel Club. On the other hand, Creative Grooming, which has appeared at the show for the last few years, showcases over-the-top grooming masterpieces using animal-friendly dyes, accessories and wacky and creative haircuts.

Please check www.houstondogshows.com for specific events and schedules. General adult admission is $15 per day at the door. Tickets for senior citizens are $10 and children 12 or younger are admitted free with adult. Tickets for active or retired service personnel and family are $5 with ID. Parking is $12, cash only. Formerly known as the Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows, the Houston World Series of Dog Shows is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and supervised by Onofrio Dog Shows. During its five-day run, the show attracts more than 40,000 spectators and participants and 14,000 entrants.  The series’ main sponsor is Purina® Dog Food, makers of Purina Pro-Plan® dog food.
